"Oops, I did it again..."

Just wanted to quote my favorite mother of all time, Brittany Spears. Just kidding. Bad taste I know.

I failed my oral glucose test, again. Not that it is something that I can control. My doctor didn't even bother with the blood glucose test this time. So they just sent me to the Diabetes Education Center last week to get my meter and some review. It wasn't even a super informative appointment because since I remembered so much from last time that the RN did not have any new advice for me. We decided that I would just use my old diet from before and to come in if I needed any adjustments or help. It worked very well last time. The dietician was so suprised that I didn't need insulin because my test results were so bad. But I was very disciplined and stuck to my diet religiously. I plan to do that again in hopes of the same good results.

Unfortunately this last week was still very stressful. My blood sugars took a few days to level out and become regulated. My numbers have been pretty good but I could feel the swings. Yuck. I also find it hard again to constantly be thinking of my food. Gestational Diabetes diets are so strict because you only have two to three months to get control in order to benefit mom and baby versus diabetics who have the rest of their lives. My blood sugars have to be much lower and the amounts of food each meal are very specific. Granted it is all worth it but is a lot of work. My poor family has been very patient with me. Now I have the hormonal shifts, low blood sugars occasionally, and it has been very hot without air conditioning. I have been a joy to live with. Yeah...

I guess also I have been scared this week as well. I hoped to not have to deal with Gestational Diabetes again. However, the reality is hitting me that the odds that I will be diabetic later in life are very high. I have seen tons of percentages but the average is that if you have Gestational Diabetes then you have a 60-70% chance that you will have Type II later, sometimes as early as 10-15 years later. Last time I ignored those stats because things were completely normal after my delivery, as it is expected to be even this time. But I have realized that I need to change my habits now to possibly prevent or if only to delay Diabetes down the road. That has hit me like a brick wall. I am reading some great books on the subject and feel better but I think that even though I have been somber this week, I am glad that I am finally taking this seriously. Changes now will be easier than later.

Funnies

I came down stairs, upset about something, and said, "Oh, geez!"

Analiese looked at me and said, "Jesus? Jesus? Mom, he's not here. He's gone," with a condescending attitude, like I should know better or something.

My mother-in-law about fell off the couch laughing at us.

Catch Up

Well mostly old but great news, no pictures yet, as you will soon read why....

May 8th, we drove out to Utah for my brother's wedding. Jordan is the fifth kid in the family for those of you who are unfamiliar. It was really fun. Jordan married a great girl named Ninette. She has two cute girls, Sage and Zoey. We stayed with Brandi and Cory, because they are awesome. And Analiese had a great time following Brandi around all weekend. Jordan's wedding reception was that Saturday before Mother's Day. It was nice and Morgan, Nic's wife, did the catering for the reception. Saturday night Damen arrived and then all seven siblings were together again. Miracle.

Mother's Day was neat. All the Bassett siblings and family went out to eat that afternoon. Not a norm but none of us planned to cook, as often happens on vacation. Ha! We got Mom a card, flowers, and a book she wanted. It was really nice to be together. While we were there Erik, Analiese, and I went to BYU campus and bought ourselves BYU hats and shirts. We also went to the Distribution Center and I loaded up on Primary pictures for my calling. We ended up coming back that next Tuesday. Time flies.

Next big thing has been that Erik left for Hawaii on business June 1st, about two and a half weeks ago. When he gets back this weekend, it will have been three weeks total. Now I know you are all thinking, "Hawaii, oh how horrible. Not." Well I can attest that sightseeing by yourself is a bummer and he has to head to work while everyone is heading for the beach. So it is a mixed bag. Besides we have missed him a lot. Father's Day was okay but not great without him. I waited to late to send his cards and had to ship them 2-day priority, $17.00. Yikes. But I figured that since they were probably all that he would get, it was okay.

I have to give a quick props to all the people who have fed us, entertained us, and just checked to see how we were holding up. And thanks to my mother-in-law for coming to break up the monotony last week. What a help! I have had to pray every Sunday just to able to get through church and I have really been blessed. I am so grateful to not be a single parent. I have no idea how anyone does it. It has developed a new sense of appreciation in me for Erik and all that he does for us as a family, and has reminded me that I love having him around.

I have gotten a lot of projects done since he left, just so that time would fly by. It has worked well so far. I have finished another set of maternity scrubs, even better than the first pair. I am the woman. I set up a filing system, hence finding crucial documents and some old credit cards, thank goodness, and now know where things are. I had the office cleaned out, had being the operative word. I decided to paint the kids room green, to go with the baby's safari bedding. Now my office is filled with Analiese's toys and clothes. The color looks great and I am finally fixing the "Great Pepto Disaster of 2006," as I like to call it. When we moved in I decided that Analiese needed a pink room because it would be fun. It was cute but not exactly what I hoped. I never fixed it because it was a lot of work. I just decorated to match and went on with life. Now the green seems to be working out, but we'll see. Maybe this will be the "Great Puke Disaster of 2008," who knows.

So when my office gets cleaned out again, I will post wedding photos, more belly pictures, painting pictures, etc. I have my glucose test tommorow at the OB's, wish me luck. We'll see if I have Gestational Diabetes again. I had better have that chocolate cake and ice cream tonight I think....
